Ball/Room Queer 2023
An underground LGBTQ+ subculture that originated in New York City is known as the Ballroom Scene (also known as the Ballroom community, Ballroom culture, or just Ballroom). In response to racism experienced in established drag queen pageant circuits, Black and Latino drag queens organized their own pageants in the late 20th century.
They formed "houses" and the leaders "Mothers & Fathers" were experienced ballroom dancers, typically drag queens, gay men or transgender women, who provided guidance and support to their house members. Houses served as alternative support systems for those isolated from conventional families/systems.
Participants compete for cash prizes and trophies in these categories.
These are their stories.
